WEEKLY THURSDAY NIGHT RACING

During the 6 primary weeks of our summer camp program, we conduct an open racing series each Thursday evening (except during the week of our annual Family BBQ Fundraiser, when Thursday Night Racing is held on Wednesday). All current campers enrolled in a session that’s underway, along with alumni and any staff members not working that night, are invited to participate and race. In addition, SBJSA Community Boating Members are also welcome and encouraged to participate. Anyone can race just one Thursday night, or multiple Thursdays, based on personal availability and interest.

Sailboat classes include Laser Radial, 420 and Opti. If 3 or more boats of another one-design class are present, then they will receive their own start as well. Thursday Night Racing is also open to members of the Sodus Bay Yacht Club and their families who wish to utilize the Club's fleet of Ideal 18 keelboats or other one-design class boats owned by members.

For campers wishing to race on Thursdays during the weeks they’re attending camp, there is no boat charter fee to use an SBJSA boat. For campers who wish to race on a Thursday night but are not attending camp during that week, as well as any alumni at any time, there is a one-time, annual, small boat use fee of $20 to use an SBJSA boat, whether for one Thursday night race, or for multiple Thursdays in a calendar year. If a person brings their own boat to race, there is no boat use fee. Any current staff members (both paid and CITs) or any qualified SBJSA Community Boating members wishing to race may use an SBJSA boat at no charge for Thursday Night racing (only).

The 2020 entry fee for all sailors each Thursday evening is $10 per person, no exception, regardless of what boat is being sailed. Each participant is required to fill out an entry form and  pay the Program Director, or his/her designee, on each Thursday evening before racing begins. Each boat user and, if under 21, also their parent or legal guardian, must sign the 2020 SBJSA Camp Boat Use & Liability Release Agreement document which, among other things, spells out responsibility for boat repair costs in the event that damage or loss of equipment occurs.

As a result of the need to maintain the health and safety of all participants and staff in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, in 2020 our Thursday Night Series will utilize a completely different schedule to safely limit the number of sailors on-site at SBJSA. Instead of all sailboat classes racing every Thursday for 6 weeks as usual, this year only we’re going to limit racing to the following schedule and classes of boats, assuming that NYS Phase 4 re-openings of camps (like ours) commences on June 29th as anticipated:

July 9th: singlehanded Optis

July 16th: singlehanded Lasers

July 23nd: single or doublehanded 420s (if doublehanded, must be 2 family members from same household; either parent/child or 2 siblings)

July 30th: singlehanded Optis

Aug 6th: singlehanded Lasers

Aug 13th: single or doublehanded 420s (if doublehanded, must be 2 family members from same household, either parent/child or 2 siblings).

There will be a limit of 10 sailors each Thursday Night and participants must register in advance. We will be sending out simple entry form details in early July, with weekly reminders thereafter.

All boats to be used that evening will be pre-cleaned & sanitized, rigged and made ready to go by our staff. Boats will be arranged on the beach to maintain distancing before and during launch. Upon returning after racing, participants will leave all boats on the beach and leave the premises. Staff will de-rig the boats, clean and disinfect them and put away all equipment.

Racing commences just to the south of our waterfront area on Sodus Bay at approximately 6 p.m., and concludes by 8:30 p.m. Come and join in on the fun!
